At Northrop, creating a workspace that honors the rich Indigenous history of their Parramatta location was more than just a design challenge—it was a deeply held value. Partnering with Crest, Northrop sought to seamlessly blend their office environment with the historical, cultural, and natural elements that define the area.
Parramatta is a place deeply rooted in Indigenous heritage, once a significant meeting site for various communities. Northrop’s dedication to both people and place echoes this legacy, ensuring that their workspace design reflects the ethos of the region.
The design’s narrative flows through every aspect of the space, beginning with a visual and tactile experience that symbolizes the convergence of saltwater and freshwater—an element central to the cultural history of the area. This idea is brought to life through a unique central gathering space, offering a meaningful connection to the past while fostering collaboration.
A continuous datum line weaves through the office, from reception to open work areas, echoing the natural flow of the Parramatta River and its changing heights. This design choice is more than an aesthetic statement—it is a tribute to the river's historical significance, reminding employees and visitors of their location’s deep-rooted past.
Natural colors inspired by the lifecycle of the lemon-scented gum tree extend into the back-of-house spaces, connecting the design to local flora. Collaboration areas further reinforce this connection, featuring Indigenous carpeting from Milliken as part of the "Reconciliation Through Design" initiative. These deliberate choices ensure that the office design serves a greater purpose, with proceeds from the carpeting directly benefiting Indigenous communities.
In the reception area, Indigenous artwork subtly integrated into acoustic panels greets visitors, offering a powerful visual focal point that ties the space together.
Northrop’s workspace is more than a reflection of their commitment to great design—it’s a testament to their respect for the local community and the region’s Indigenous heritage. Through intentional choices, they’ve created an environment that not only honors the past but also contributes to a brighter, more connected future.
